What does a Cemetery Maintenance employee do?

Here are some of the basic responsibilities of our Cemetery Maintenance employees:

  • Perform tasks of grounds maintenance requiring the knowledge of use and general maintenance of mechanized equipment, including weed eaters, walk-behind mowers, hedge-trimmers and edgers.
  • Perform routine tasks in the set-up and completion of interments and entombments.
  • Assist in the general maintenance of cemetery, mausoleum and funeral home appearances.

Forklift Operator Alex Hernandez checks behind him while moving his equipment into position to prepare for a service.

As the cemetery supervisor at Restland of Dallas, Kevin Long completes details for interments and daily groundwork while coordinating burials, working with other departments and double-checking to make sure each task is carried out correctly.

“We average 10 services a day,” Long said. “So, we’ve got to make sure that we get it right.” Long, a 16-year cemetery veteran, is responsible for a staff of 41 employees and oversees every type of job imaginable, including those dealing with maintenance, interments and markers. “It’s a real team effort,” Long explained.

Long was working at a nearby nursery when a local funeral home manager approached him and asked him if he’d be interested in a job at the cemetery. He gave it some thought, he said, and the rest is history.

“I really enjoy the work,” Long said. “It’s been a learning experience. Everyone who works with me has years of experience and that has made my job easier.”
